Reach out to someone.

I received an unexpected e-mail over one of the social network

sites the other day.

No, I am not into Facebook or Tweeter or those networks,

and certainly not on the matchmaking

ones either (adding that just for clarity).

This site is for business professionals, and the e-mail I received

out of the blue had come from someone I had mentored

as an intern almost twenty two years ago.

He wanted to know if first he had the right Tomás.

After a couple of e-mails we were back in sync.

He added, "It was a blessing to see another minority, sharp,

articulate, well dressed and riding in style in the fancy convertible you had.

You would often share stories of wisdom, many of them dealing with sharing,

and helping others get to where they needed to be."

He also wanted to get together for lunch because we were in the same city,

and catch up.

I was both surprised and grateful that this young man still remembered me.

He spoke of his tripping over himself and his awkwardness back then.

That all has changed, today he is a well educated, successful professional.

We are planning on having lunch at the end of the month.

We all have people who we have lost contact with.

With all the different types of social network channels we should reconnect.

Especially with those friends that we’ve lost touch with over the years.

Maybe those connections shouldn't have been broken, possibly due to

a variety of reasons, from personal relocations, job changes,

children, or whatever.

Back in the old days moving to the next village (Bavispe was just 10 miles away)

meant that you would very likely seldom communicate with that person.

A 50 mile move meant that you may never see or speak to that person again.

Today things are different and communicating is both free,

and easily accomplished.

All it takes is a little extra time to reach out to an old friend to bring

some much needed extra happiness to both your lives.

I am grateful that this young man decided to take a little extra effort to reach out.

I am excited to see him, and hear where all he has been and done.

There is a Chinese proverb that says, "A man should choose a friend

who is better than himself."

There are plenty of acquaintances in the world; but very few real friends.

Reach out to your current and old ones.

You will both be glad you did.

Make it a great día!
